Sabb One Cylinder Diesel Marine Engine
Marine Diesel….with starter-generator.
This Starter-Generator Combo unit is very simuliar to a golf-cart starter-generator.
It’s a Bosch Unit very much`like the ones used on early Harley-Davidson Gas powered 3 wheel golf carts.
It came to me a mess. All the wires were twisted inside from miss handling of the main terminal.
I restored the unit to like new condition and adapted a New Delco 12 volt Regulator to control it. A Ford Starter Relay works the “Start” side of the circuit. (Thats the bigger Red wire running behind the unit.
This is a great addition to any small engine up to 20 hp not equipped with a starter or charging system.
This little diesel has`a compression release to allow you to ’spin’ the motor and use the heavy flywheel as help in starting an engine with 450-500 lbs compression as a diesel has.

I knew the compression release would stop it.
The Fairbanks-Morse Engine in my other vids can be stopped by just holding in on the intake valve.
I grew up in state of Maine ,mostly OJT ,
by yourself learning.

to stop engine it’s better to put the regulator to stop , lifting the decompression handle to stop engine is not recomended by manufacturer!
(will destroy valve or seat at longer tyme!)

If it’s a 24 0r 36 volt unit with batteries in floor board your best bet is a new motor
(check E-Bay)

Actually, they are still making them. My cousin and I have been considering putting one into a newer boat. Then again, we live in Bergen, Norway, where these engines were made originally. Not sure where they’re made now, but Sabb still have a workshop in Bergen. Dropped by to get a few seals and such.

Nice engine! I have one too. It’s from 1961 and in very good condition. I also have a 2 sylinder called 2H, 18 hp from 1973. I’ve had an 2G 16 hp from 1959 earlier.

Sabb is VERY reliabe, one of the most reliable small diesel’s that exists! Too bad they’re not making them any more…
